US and Canadian log and lumber exports to China up over 150 percent in 2010
Seattle, USA, Jan 6, 2011 - China has come to the rescue for many sawmills and timberland owners in the US and Canada the past year. The value of softwood logs and lumber shipped from North America to China is estimated to reach over 1.6 billion US dollar in 2010, which is up dramatically from just a few years ago. In 2008, total exports were valued at 350 million dollars, while they were only 125 million dollars five years ago.
Trees planted in China to neutralize carbon emissions of UN conference
Shanxi, Dec. 28, 2010 (Xinhua News Agency) -- A newly planted forest will neutralize carbon dioxide emissions from a UN climate change conference as China ups its efforts to combat climate change, an official said here Tuesday.
Global MDF capacity reached 72.9 million m3 in 2009 - an increase of 4.0 million m3 (+5.8%) over 2008. In 2009, China remains the world’s largest MDF-producing country at 32.5 million m3 - that’s 45% of world capacity!
The forest industry in China is continuing its expansion, and with limited domestic timber resources, importation of logs and wood chips are at an all-time high, especially as tight supply of domestic logs has increased local log prices to new highs.
According to Zhang Jianlong, deputy administrator of the State Forestry Administration, China's total timber consumption will increase from 457 million cu. m in 2009 to 477 million cu. m for 2010, and the demand for timber imports for domestic consumption will grow from 100 million cu.
