A number of environmental groups have combined in opposition to the post-Copenhagen process aiming to fast track the international REDD+ initiative. Led by France and Norway, the so-called Paris-Oslo process sees developed and developing countries attempting to push on with a global REDD agreement that came close to being finalised at the UN climate conference last December.

The Rainforest Foundation UK, Friends of the Earth in USA and France, Global Witness and The Wilderness Society say the process risks rushing through a flawed mechanism that does not establish adequate safeguards for local people and the environment.

Fast-start funding approaching $6 billion has been pledged by rich nations for establishing a REDD framework in the developing world over the next three years. But the green groups say the process is not properly accountable to UN climate convention and isn’t tackling the underlying causes of deforestation. They have called for greater consultation with indigenous people and NGOs.
