Growth in timber exports from Brazil

Recent data on the Brazilian timber industry reveals that exports of timber products from the country (excluding pulp and paper) were at US$206 million in June, up a healthy 19 per cent on the previous year.

During the same period, exports of tropical sawnwood fell in both volume and value terms, however, to 38,500 cu.m and US$17.9 million, a decrease of 4.7 per cent in volume and 3.8 per cent in value terms on 2009.

Govt to remove tax on log products: forestry minister

Forestry Ministry Zulkifli Hasan said the Finance Ministry had agreed to proposals to remove value-added tax (VAT) imposed on log products.

He claimed former finance minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati had signed a proposal to cancel the tax when she was in the office.

“[Mulyani] agreed to cancel VAT for log products. The regulation will take effect this month. This is good as it will not burden industries because raw materials were not supposed to be taxed,” he said Sunday.

Major American pension fund puts confidence in timber

Confidence in timber investment funds has been heightened after a major American state pension fund decided to put $500 million into timber.

Massachusetts Pension Reserves Investment Management Board (Mass PRIM) has decided to make the investment just three years after selling a $700 million section of its timber portfolio.

Senior timber investment officer at Mass PRIM, Tim Schlitzer, said it was a perfect time to reinvest in the long-term benefits that timber can provide.
