Scientific Certification Systems (SCS) has assessed the World Bank’s new methodology for estimating the emission reductions resulting from adoption of sustainable agricultural practices.

The new methodology was approved under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) and is based on the Western Kenya Smallholder Agriculture Carbon Finance project.

“The World Bank’s methodology will help small scale farmers access global carbon market whilst improving crop production over the long run,” said Dr. Robert J. Hrubes, Senior Vice President of SCS. “It’s a win-win for farmers.”

The Western Kenya project, which is supported by the World Bank’s Carbon Finance Unit’s BioCarbon Fund, focuses on helping farmers adopt practices that increase carbon in soil and biomass on agricultural lands..

The new methodology will allow project developers to estimate the greenhouse gas emissions reductions of sustainable land management practices (SALM) in the agricultural landscape. Some of the practices included in the methodology are manure management, use of cover crops, crop residual management and the introduction of trees to the landscape.

Scientific Certification Systems (SCS) has been providing global leadership in third-party environmental and sustainability certification, auditing, testing and standards development for more than 25 years. SCS programs span a wide cross-section of industries, recognizing achievements in green building, product manufacturing, food and agriculture, forestry, retailing and more. http://www.scscertified.com
